Hello, Knee.
At the risk of sounding wimpy, I am a little nervous over a recurring problem with my knee. It started getting better aboutt a month ago, and was not really noticeable last week. Then, It started swelling up a little and feels a little weak when doing squats or going down steps. I mostly just don't won't do something that damages it seriously. I am having a great week, but I think that the extra activities are starting to take a toll. My GP previously said it was a little tendonitis, and I don't think it is serious, but I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions....

Chuck I don't have any suggestions except Debra and I won't work you so hard this Saturday! Be careful because we don't need you injured. We are all in this together. What are you doing for your XT? I found that biking has helped. Take care. See you Saturday!

Hey Chuck:
I may have mentioned to you that I saw a phys. therapist last week for my continuing knee thing. Mainly I wanted someone to make sure I wasn't hurting anything longterm. He diagnosed my knee pain as it-cord, gave me exercises to do daily (not just when i run) several times, plus icing. I had a great run saturday and avoided downhills, which is a pain since that is the only time I go sort of fast! I'll try to remember to bring you a copy of the exercises. I called my reg. fam. dr. to give me a referral to Mark Livingstone at Flowood Sports Medicine (office inside the YMCA bldg.)

No suggestions from me except don't push yourself to overdo it!
Chuck,
Slow down and run with us turtles at the back of the pack for a few weeks. No seriously, it sounds like you're pushing yourself too hard. Slow and easy, the marathon training period is a marathon in itself. I didn't know there was another FBCJ member in the LMMer group. I also enjoyed last Sunday. Derrick Burt was great, and it's always a pleasure playing with the choir. Are you any relation to Kathy Gautier? My son, Kurt is friends with her son Cody. Please let me know who you are on Saturday so I'll recognize you at church. And thanks for your comment on my blog.
Your symptoms sound very similar to what I've been dealing with, which is "Runner's Knee" or chondromalacia. It really is where stuff gets inflamed under your kneecap. If it hurts under or below your kneecap, this is the likely culprit. If it hurts to the outside (lateral) part of your knee, it may be iliotibial band syndrome. All of this is fixable. Ice, rest, ibuprofen is the way to go. Avoid the squats for awhile, just do leg extensions and curls instead. I have to be careful with mine even just standing up from a seated position. I'll see you in the morning and will see where it hurts. I've had both IT band and runner's knee, and can certainly sympathize. Don't get discouraged -- it is temporary and you will be ready to get back in full gear soon. Take care of it, and if it hurts when you do that, don't do that. :-)
I hope you are feeling better man!!
